Lessons In Houston

Greg Varhaug began playing bass and guitar at the age of 12. He began playing semi-professionally at 17, and began playing clubs at age 18.

As a teenager, Greg studied music for two years with Hayden Nicholas, now lead guitarist for Clint Black, and co-writer of 10 number one hits. He also studied guitar with Houston jazz master Mike Szunka while taking classes at the Houston Community College commercial music program.

Greg has worked professionally for over 20 years as a player, arranger, teacher and writer. He has scored and performed on commercials, promotional videos and short films for several production companies, including a number of commercials for Congressman Charles Wilson which were aired thousands of times all over east Texas in the 1980's.

In 1990, he wrote 'Slide Guitar In Standard Tuning,' a book and cassette package that he sold by direct mail (This book will be released as an ebook on CD-ROM in 2006.)

He spent 1998 and 1999 on the island of Maui, making trips to Prairie Sun Studios in Catati, California to arrange and play on a CD by Texas singer-songwriter Bill Cabrera.

Cabrera's debut CD, Lahaina Nights features Norton Buffalo from The Steve Miller Band, along with notable players from the Tom Waits Band (drummer Chris Marvin), and Little Feat (vocalist Dallis Craft). Also on the CD were Stu Sudduth and Marvin McFadden, both of whom played with Huey Lewis and Tower of Power. Lahaina Nights was also the last recorded performance of keyboard great Stu Blank.

Back in Houston, Greg started GregsGuitar.Com in 2000. He also resumed teaching private lessons and playing clubs. He was the guitarist with the Houston reggae band 'Sanza' in 2000 and 2001. Greg joined his current band 'Fuzzy Side Up' in Febuary of 2003, first on bass guitar, then moving to guitar a year later.

Greg worked on music to several short documentary films by independent film-maker Erik Kolflat (former drummer for Carolyn Wonderland and the Hightailers). These films include The Circuit featuring Billy Dee Williams, two documentaries on the Houston Art Car Club, and an unreleased video documentary on the Burning Man Festival in Nevada.

In 2005, Greg started teaching at ABC School Of Music.
